Wolverhampton in the 50's and 60's

 Famous folk of the town.

 Sir Jack Hayward

Seen nowadays as the savior of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Dunstall born Sir Jack (sometimes known as Union Jack Hayward), now resides in the Cayman islands but has always considered the town his home.  He has now passed the reigns at wolves over to his son Jonathon.

Enoch Powell, MP for the town  from 1950

Birmingham born, this controversial member of parliament for Wolverhampton will go down in the annals for his "Rivers of blood" speech in which he called for an end to immigration and in effect said that recent events in the United states would pale into insignificance when compared to the rivers of blood the UK could expect if immigration was not halted.  This speech cost him his seat on the conservative front bench and was said by some to have lost them the general election in the 1970's.

William Ambrose Wright  C.B.E

Billy Wright, a Shropshire lad, spent his playing career at Molineux, he played for England and was the first to be awarded 100 caps.  Of the games he played for England he was captain 90 times.  He was married to Joy Beverley of the Beverley sisters, one of the first show-biz marriages.  Following his playing career he was head of sport for ITV but later returned to his beloved Molineux as part of the Jack Hayward team.  Following his death in the 1990's his ashes were scattered on the pitch.  A stand was named after him and the statue pictured left placed outside the ground.

Although born in county Durham, Monty Python star and songwriter Eric Idle went to the Royal Wolverhampton school on the Penn road.  Not only a prolific member of the Python team but he also wrote the theme tune to "One foot in the grave".  His other music include his time as a member of the Ruttles, a spoof on the Beatles and as writer of such songs as "The galaxy song" and "Always look on the bright side of life".
